If you tested at a lower level test, e.g., Y-25, Upgrades are higher-level tests that are offered to Family Tree DNA customers who have tested at a lower level test.
For example, if you ordered a Y-37 test, you will have the option to upgrade to a Y-67, Y-111, or Big Y 700 test.
The Big Y 700 will give you the most in depth analysis of your DNA
Big 700 Matches
The Big Y test includes hundreds of additional STR markers on top of the Y111 markers. When you and your Y-DNA match both have Big Y results, additional information about mismatching STR markers from these panels is shown.
While Genetic Distance is calculated based on step-wise distance of a fixed number of markers (12/25/37/67/111), the number of Big Y STRs varies between different results, due to random variation in NGS coverage.
A Big Y STR Difference of “X of Y” means that you both had calls for Y shared markers, so that they could be compared. Out of those markers, you had different values on X markers. Like with the Genetic Distance, a higher number of differences compared to the number of compared markers means that you are genetically more distantly related.
