Two Prisoners Plead Guilty for the Sake of the Clergy
SPECIAL CABLE TO THE INQUIRER.
CARRICK-ON-SHANNON, April 12 1891
Yesterday the hearing of charges of riot and assault against Paddy McManus, Cornelius McManus, John McManus, Robert Cryer and James McDermott, on the occasion of the anti-Parnell meeting at Drumshanbo on February 2 (1891) last, was proceeded with Three clergymen and tour other witnesses, who were arrested for declining to give evidence in the case, were present in custody.
Mr. Bergin, who appeared on behalf of Cornelius McManus and Paddy McManus, pleaded guilty for his clients, as they did not wish to have the priests sent to jail. He wished to be distinctly understood that the men did not admit any guilt, and only acted in this manner because they wished the priests to be set at liberty. Cornelius McManus and Paddy McManus were thereupon bound over to keep the peace for twelve months, and the other defendants were discharged, as were the priests.
