Table of Contents

This is some of the early history of the family. There are links yet to be made, but it struck me as unusual that when a child was born in trim or Dublin the newspaper notice was always put in the Belfast Newsletter and not in the Dublin papers.

This led me to believe that the family came from Northern Ireland. I have not yet investigated the material in the National Library of Ireland which is very extensive.

The Reference to NLI below is that library.

Hercules MacManus

  • Early in the 18th century, Hercules MacManus was the first man of that family to live at Mount Davis or Davies[1] and he was succeeded by his son Bryan MacManus c. 1744.

Colonel Alexander MacManus

  • Colonel Alexander MacManus was High Sheriff for Antrim in 1782 and owned lands at Ballybeg, Tullygowan, Carndonnaghy and Mount Davis.[2]

  • He married Hester Henrietta O’Neill of Flowerfield, Co. Derry.

Eliza Honoria MacManus

  • Their daughter Eliza Honoria MacManus married John Rowan of Garryduff in Ballymoney Parish and Ahoghill near Cullybackey in 1809.

If you want to search for any of these places -

i certainly was able to find AHOGHILL and Ballybeg but was unable to find Mount Davis or Davies.
