He served as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates to the Continental Congress from Henry County but opposed the passage of the U.S. Constitution. He became the 1st and 6th Governor of Virginia.

In 1794, Patrick Henry retired to Red Hill Plantation in Charlotte County, Virginia where he is buried.
