Reading and source limits

The supplied overlapping images are excerpts from a pleading in the Superior Court of Alameda County, estate of James McManus. Later handwritten reading aids overlay portions of the typescript; they should not be assumed to be original court amendments.

The opening names Frank J. McManus, Ethel McManus, May Phillips and William Phillips as contestants of a purported will dated 23 February 1891, stated to have been filed 4 August 1906. These dates describe the purported will and its filing, not necessarily the date of this pleading.

The pleading alleges death on 27 July 1906 in Alameda County, residence there, no issue of James himself, and no surviving parents or ancestors. It also alleges intestacy while contesting a purported will. These are a party’s assertions, not a supplied court judgment. The excerpts do not establish whether the contest succeeded, the will was admitted, or the estate was distributed as proposed.

“Only issue” concerns the relatives described in the 1906 pleading; it should not be read as proof that no other child was ever born. The previously imported May McManus died in 1890, so Frank J.’s description here should not cause her removal from the family.

Margaret Phillips is explicitly named as James’s deceased sister. This strengthens the connection proposed in the earlier articles, but does not by itself name her husband or prove which William Phillips was her spouse. The McGreevy sister may be Eliza from the family research, but the obscured given name needs verification before that is treated as a confirmed reading.
