Dies as He Enters Office reports the sudden death of James McManus, an Oakland undertaker, “last night” at his office at 844 Castro Street. With the supplied 28 July 1906 issue date, that places the reported death on 27 July 1906, agreeing with the current GEDCOM date.
The article says he collapsed into a chair after coming downstairs following dinner, and died before medical aid arrived. It says heart disease was believed to be the cause and that he had suffered from it for some years. This is a newspaper attribution, not a confirmed medical diagnosis of a heart attack.
It reports fifteen years in the undertaking business in Oakland, Irish birth, age 60, an unnamed surviving widow, and membership in the Elks, Eagles and other unnamed fraternal organizations.
Age 60 suggests birth about 1845–1846, conflicting with the GEDCOM birth date 1 March 1851. Fifteen years in business suggests about 1891, but is an estimate, not a documented business founding date.
