Newspaper evidence, added 21 September 2026
The funeral notice names wife Ella, daughter Ethel, brother James, and sister Mrs. William Philips. It gives death on 20 January 1901, age 46, and announces interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Oakland. Burial and plot details still need cemetery confirmation.
The tree’s 1 August 1843 birth and 23 January 1901 death remain recorded as tree claims, not resolved dates. Other notices give age 45 or about 40; the obituary address is 717 Folsom, versus 719 in the GEDCOM. See the clipping review article for the full comparison.
The funeral notice is now identified as The San Francisco Call, 23 January 1901. Its announced funeral is on that date; the notice explicitly gives 20 January 1901 as the death date.
The pneumonia obituary is identified as The Evening Bee, Sacramento, 22 January 1901. Its “Sunday night” supports 20 January as the reported death date, and “tomorrow” announces burial for 23 January.
Additional probate and register evidence
